FEET ON THE GROUND HEAD IN THE SKY

Modern Painters, New Decorators Loughborough, UK

10th - 24th October 2020

The exhibition Feet On The Ground Head In The Sky was the product of the The Graduate Project, a three month residency and mentoring programme run by Modern Painters, New Decorators in Loughborough. The artists involved were three Loughborough University School of Creative Arts 2020 graduates; myself, Alice Burnhope and Emma Wright . My pieces featured in the exhibition consisted of four 35mm black and white photographs and a three minute long video.

The project I developed on the residency centred around the concept of home and connection to place.

I explored the areas around my current and two former family homes. I let the space guide me wherever it wanted me to go and photographed what I was drawn to. The initial lockdown due to COVID-19 was the first extended period of time I was spending in my family’s new town whilst calling it home.

Having to spend such an intense amount of time in a place that didn’t feel mine led me to consider what about a place makes it feel like home. I wandered through the changing landscapes, reflecting on my connection to them. I found that some connections were still strong, many had been lost and others were still yet to be made.

All The Places I’d Call Home

Video Piece 2020

A 3 minute long video made up of Polaroid’s and a narration voiced by myself, played on a loop on an old tv. I used Polaroids and an analogue television to bring a sense of nostalgia to the piece. The narration was made up of thoughts I’d jotted down whilst wandering through the three spaces and reflects on my connection to those places in terms of viewing them as home.
